All Smoky Mountain High School juniors will take the ACT on Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a mandatory assessment required by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for all juniors in the state.
Between now and Feb. 20, SMHS encourages all juniors to prepare for the ACT by using the ACT Academy account provided to them at no cost by the school. Students who have questions about this account should see their guidance counselor in the Student Support Center as soon as possible.
On Friday, Feb. 8, all juniors will meet in the cafeteria at 9 a.m. to complete the ACT pre-exam information. They will need to have their fully charged laptops with them. Important information will be provided regarding how to take the online exam, test room locations, and excused absences from Southwestern Community College classes on test day. It is very important that juniors attend this meeting.
For students interested in more intensive ACT preparation, SMHS is offering a weekend ACT Boot Camp for any SMHS student, grades 9-12. Regional trainers, Martin and Donna Talbert, will conduct a two-part weekend course. Course hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 16, and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17. This program is perfect for any college bound student who would like ACT testing experience, as well as supplemental practice. The cost is $145 and includes an ACT prep book, test taking strategies, question analysis, answer explanations, and lunch on Saturday. Students can register in the front office now through Tuesday, Feb. 12. Checks should be payable to SMHS. More information about the boot camp is available in a flyer:
