The Visual Arts program at Smoky Mountain High School provides an art experience for all students. Students taking Art I are exposed to a variety of art media as well as having the opportunity to learn about the history of art and its relevance to history and society. More advanced students continue this exploration as they develop their skills in specific media. The goal is to help all students find a venue for their art through community art shows and contests such as the Scholastic Youth Art Display and other local events.
Art I is a survey-type course where students learn the basics of art by being exposed to different media such as painting, drawing, printmaking, and ceramics. Art II focuses on the principles of design and the combination of art elements to create a well-rounded 2D or 3D piece of art. The advanced classes focus on building a quality portfolio for students who may consider pursuing entry into an art program at a two or four-year college.
