About

Smokey Mountain Elementary School is a K-8 school nestled in the Smoky Mountains. Located in Whittier, our school is close to the towns of Sylva, Bryson City, and Cherokee, NC. We are a hidden gem in the mountains!

Our school community stands behinds its mission, "To Inspire Dreams and Promote Excellence." We believe that our students are our future musicians, artists, athletes, coaches, teachers, doctors, electricians, mechanics . . . and more. They are individuals with unique interests who make our local and global community a better place to live!

The atmosphere of our student body celebrates diversity! Our Positive Behavior Intervention and Support program (PBIS) equips students to build sustaining relationships with one another, as well as, to develop their own best self. We offer many opportunities for students to engage and connect, such as, athletic teams, LEGO Robotics, Battle of the Books, National Beta Club, Junior Tarheel Scholars, New Century Scholars, Japanese Culture Club, SME Singers, and more.

Preparing students for future jobs is a top priority for our middle school Career Technology Education program. Our students participate in computer programming, problem-based learning, and applications in math, media, and art. Students have access to our 3D printer and are eligible to participate in our STAC team, LEGO Robotics Competition Team, and LEGO Robotics Club.

As a recipient of Community Eligibility, all of our students are able to eat breakfast and lunch at no cost to the student. Our students reduce waste through recycling and support local hunger by giving unused food to our local food pantry. Along with healthy food, we encourage our students to stay active. Students participate in an annual Health Fair, Jump Rope for Hearts, Heart of Gold, and Field Day.

The community of parents, extended family, and community sponsors join our students during events, such as, Service to Other Projects, Student Talent Show, Math Night, Curriculum Night, Cherokee Culture Day, and Open House Events. Our PTO helps support our teachers and campus by funding materials for playgrounds and classrooms. Community in Schools works with our students, staff, and community to provide additional support for our families. Whether the program provides check in’s for students, classes for parents, technology devices, or supplies for school fundraisers, there is no doubt that our local community supports our program and mission to serve students.

Our staff is dedicated to creating an atmosphere of learning that supports the whole child and the community of those who are invested in their development. We provide meaningful instruction that engages students and looks to strengthen their natural interests. Through the mindset that all children can be successful, we serve our students!
