About

Founded in 1851, Jackson County is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Ranging in elevation from 2,000 feet to more than 6,000 feet, the county's 491 square miles feature spectacular scenery and abundant opportunities for outdoor adventure. According to the 2010 census, Jackson County's population is 40,271.

Despite our rural location, we are not isolated. Jackson County is centrally located between Charlotte, NC, Atlanta, GA, and Knoxville, TN, and Asheville NC is a pleasant one-hour drive away. It is the perfect mix of quiet country with easy access to urban conveniences.

Schools in Jackson County date back as far as 1820, and the first superintendent took office in 1853. Since then, the district has advanced through several consolidations to its current number of nine schools with more than 3,700 students and nearly 300 certified teachers.

Post-secondary education is locally available from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee and Southwestern Community College in Sylva. Both institutions are well-respected and have been recognized nationally for their excellence.
