Our Schools

Exceptional Children

There are three full-time Exceptional Children’s Program teachers at Cullowhee Valley who work with mainstreamed students in Kindergarten–8th grade. We serve students as small group pull outs as well as inclusion depending on the needs of the individual child. Every student in our program has an Individual Education Plan with goals written to address their individual needs.

Life Skills/Intensive Needs Exceptional Children’s Program

Our class is designed to address the individual needs of students who require direct instruction to acquire, maintain and generalize skills within a small group setting. Life skills are taught for students to become as independent as possible and to be able to function within their community environment.

We teach:

  • Life Skills
  • Appropriate behaviors for specific settings
  • Social Skills
  • Family Support
  • Academic Skills based on individual abilities
  • Basic Housekeeping Skills
  • Hygiene Skills
  • Community Based Instruction – teaching students how to interact with people in the community:
    • Ordering food
    • Shopping for food
    • Appropriate behavior in public, etc.

Every student in our program has an Individual Education Plan with goals written to address their individual needs. We are also happy to provide information for services in the community for students with intensive needs.
