Music

Students in grades K-6 have music class once per week. K-3 classes focus on singing, playing classroom instruments, dance and movement activities, and an introduction to playing piano.

Students in grades 4-5 learn to read music notation by playing soprano recorders along with classroom instruments. They learn about composers, music history, and about instruments of the orchestra. They are given the opportunity to play melodies on the piano.

In 6th grade, students continue to play recorder and piano, and they are introduced to the ukulele as a gateway to other string instruments.

Students in grades 3-6 can participate in "Junior Appalachian Musicians" which meets at Blue Ridge on Monday afternoons for instruction in guitar, banjo, fiddle, and mandolin. They are also invited to be a part of the school musical. Rehearsals for the musical take place after school dismissal.

Students in grades 5 & 6 have the opportunity to audition for the All-County Honors Chorus which performs at Western Carolina University in December.
